The acquisition is dated September, but with Apple's Siri dominating the headlines, there's speculation that Amazon may further develop what was formally a voice-to-text voicemail transcription service that never made it out of private beta. The ad-supported Kindle was first launched in April of this year and cost $114, which was seen as extremely cheap for an ereader at the time. When the price dropped to $79, well, we couldn't believe our eyes. However, it seems that selling the device so cheap means Amazon is actually taking a hit when it comes to production costs.

MainStreet reports it has received confirmation from iSupply with regard to the production cost of the Kindle. iSupply said it did a teardown of the new Kindle and found that the total cost of materials used in each device, including the e-ink display screen and printed chip board, is $78.59, while the total cost of putting it together is $5.66. This brings the production cost of each $79 Kindle to $84.25 and would mean Amazon is taking a loss of $5.25 with each unit sold.

Most touchscreen devices have some sort of slide-to-unlock function. Whether it's up, down or side to side, a swift, predefined gesture is the way most of us unlock our touchscreen phones and tablets. However, it looks like any phone that does do this is infringing upon a patent owned by iPhone maker Apple.

9to5 Mac reports that the United States Patent and Trademark Office yesterday morning granted Apple approval on a patent an application covering "a predefined gesture for unlocking the device." Specifically, the patent lays out a scenario where the device is unlocked if contact with the display corresponds to a predefined gesture for unlocking the device:

"The device displays one or more unlock images with respect to which the predefined gesture is to be performed in order to unlock the device. The performance of the predefined gesture with respect to the unlock image may include moving the unlock image to a predefined location and/or moving the unlock image along a predefined path."

The application for this patent was filed in 2009, two years after the first iPhone was announced, and one year after the first Android phone hit the market. Though Apple has not yet mentioned anything about pursuing other companies that are now in violation of this patent, we doubt the company will waste any time in taking competitors to court over this one.

The data center will have a floor space of more than 900,000 square feet, which exceeds the size of 15 football fields. According to the town of Lulea, the facility will be built in three phases and eventually consist of three separate server rooms that are designed to handle a substantial portion of Facebook's data traffic. The completion date is targeted for 2014.
Facebook has been frequently criticized, especially by Greenpeace, that it does not make enough effort to achieve an efficient use of energy in its data centers and draw most of its power from coal power plants. The Lulea data center will consume power that is exclusively produced by water power plants and the natural climate should help bring down the power consumption quite a bit. However, with Google's latest update to Street View, you'll also be able to check out the interiors of local businesses.

Venture Beat reports that Google has started its pilot phase of photographing the interiors of businesses that volunteer to have their photo taken. Those wishing to take part in the program have to fill out an application form and notify customers of the day Google will be photographing the business. As usual, Google will be blurring the faces of any people that make it into the shot, but in a new twist, the search giant may opt not to use the photo at all if there are people in it.

The 360 degree photos that Google captures will remain the property of Google and will appear on businesses' Google pages as well as Street View

An unnamed source close to Apple told the New York Times that Steve Jobs' comment of "I've finally cracked it" was referring to the use of Siri on an HDTV, not to an actual TV set.

According to the report, Apple engineers and designers have been struggling for years to create a new interface for TV and replace the remote control. The goal is to give consumers a way to choose content on their television screen just as easily as they do on the iPod Touch, iPhone and iPad. Developing alternative remote idea concepts like a wireless keyboard/mouse combo or using an iOS device as a remote just hasn't produced the desired results.

The "I finally cracked it moment" came when Apple realized that you could simply talk to the TV, thus Siri was conceived. Unlike Kinect which not only includes voice commands but actual hand gestures, Apple's Siri supposedly will allow the couch potato to simply say "put on the last episode of Gossip Girl" or "play the local news headlines" or "play YouTube videos of cute cats falling asleep."

HP CEO Meg Whitman confirmed that the company has no plans to bring the TouchPad tablet back from the dead. In fact, HP will use Windows 8 instead of the defunct webOS going forward, but it's still unclear whether the company plans to retain the "TouchPad" branding, or go with something else.

"I think we need to be in the tablet business and we're certainly going to be there with Windows 8," she said. "We're going to make another run at this business."

As for webOS, its future is still up in the air according to the conference call. But now that HP has made its final decision concerning the PC division, Whitman said the next order of business is to evaluate the platform it acquired from Palm. Right now HP is still working on the software, pumping out updates to current tablet and smartphone owners.

As indicated earlier, HP may license out the software to third parties much like Microsoft does with Windows Phone, and is supposedly negotiating with those companies now. But as of this writing, there hasn't been an official nibble made known to the press, nor has HP publicly announced that any kind of potential licensing deal is actually on the menu.

During Thursday's conference call, Todd Bradley, executive vice president of HP's Personal Systems Group, revealed that the company is "very focused" on the "ultramobile" space of sub-17 millimeter notebooks. He also admitted to the pressure HP is currently facing in the short term thanks to the "hangover" caused by its August 18 revelation of exploring a spin-off.
"HP had yet to announce its intentions for the Ultrabook market and has been notably quiet as Lenovo, Asus, Acer, and Toshiba have all announced new ultra-thin models," Deron Kershaw, an analyst at GAP Intelligence, said in a research note.
